Using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in Spain | NHS

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
BRITISH EMBASSY MADRID This is the life, eh, Alfie? First holiday in Spain
now we’ve retired. Alfie, wake up! AFTER SUN We look redder than a Spanish tomato! To the nearest public hospital, please. HOSPITAL GENERAL UNIVERSITARIO
URGENCIAS Please, wait! If you need to see a doctor,
make sure to visit a public hospital or medical centre. Use your European Health Insurance Card
or EHIC to be treated under the public system, and don’t forget or your travel insurance
to cover other unexpected costs. Here’s my EHIC. That was easy. An EHIC card covers you for
public medically necessary care during a holiday
in another European Union country. “Medically necessary” means treatment
that can’t wait till you get home, like the Thompsons. Even if you do have an EHIC,
get travel insurance. An EHIC doesn’t cover everything,
like an air ambulance or get you any private treatment.
No insurance could mean big bills. Sugar! My EHIC’s at home! If you’ve lost or forgotten your EHIC,
just call the Overseas Healthcare Team on 00 44 191 218 1999. For more information
on the European Health Insurance Card, visit www.healthcareinspain.eu. Avoid an EHIC-cup on holiday. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
