United Health Care and UAB contract ends

THIS MORNING — TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY UNITED HEALTHCARE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AT UAB. LAST WEEK- WE HEARD FROM THE UAB CEO THAT NEGOTIATIONS WERE*NOT WORKING OUT AND THAT UNITED WAS TERMINATING THEIR CONTRACT WITH UAB. SO WHAT DOES THIS*EXACTLY MEAN? CBS 42 NEWS REPORTER HILLARY SIMON IS LIVE OUTSIDE UAB. HILLARY- GOOD MORNING. GOOD MORNING ART. BOTH PARTIES HAVE POINTED THE FINGER AT WHO IS TO BLAME. UAB CLAIMS THEY NEGOTIATED BETTER RATES FOR UNITED…UNITED CLAIMS UAB CHARGES MUCH MORE THAN ANY OTHER HOSPITAL. SO UNTIL THIS IS ALL SETTLED- UAB PATIENTS WHO HAVE UNITED HEALTHCARE WILL HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS THE EMERGENCY ROOM. ALSO IF YOU’RE BROUGHT IN AS A TRAUMA PATIENT- THE HOSPITAL CAN FILE A SINGLE CASE WITH UNITED BUT IT’S NOT GUARANTEED THE COMPANY WILL PAY. THIS DOESN’T JUST AFFECT THE UAB HOSPITAL DIRECTLY– BUT OTHER HOSPITALS AND DOCTORS IN THE STATE AFFILIATED WITH UAB. THE CEO OF UAB HEALTH SYSTEMS SAYS WITH THEIR CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY, THEY’RE USUALLY THE ONLY CHOICE FOR PATIENTS. it’s very upsetting to me that our patients are being put through this and we’re doing everything we can as UAB everything we can to settle this. because if you’re a patient, lets say you got treated for cancer here and now get all your care here, think how upsetting that would be that you would have to change all your care. that is not acceptable. UNITED HEALTHCARE RELEASED THESE GRAPHS. THEY CLAIM UAB CHARGES SIGNIFICANTLY MORE THAN ANY OTHER HOSPITAL IN THE STATE. COMPARED TO OTHER STATES- UNITED SAY UAB CHARGES AT LEAST 50- PERCENT MORE THAN THE AVERAGE OUT OF STATE. SO BOTTOM LINE– WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE FUTURE OF UAB AND UNITED HEALTH CARE? CAN THIS EVER BE RESOLVED? I’LL HAVE THAT FOR YOU AT 6:30. LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM HILLARY SIMON CBS 42 NEWS LOCAL COVERAGE YOU CAN COUNT ON John Delaney/ -D- Presidential Candidate: “I’m the only one on this stage who has experience in the healthcare business and with all due respect, I don’t think my colleagues
