UAB Health System, United Healthcare tentatively reach agreement on contract

FOR SOME PARENTS, THIS IS A BIG
SIGH OF RELIEF. MARY: TODAY, UAB HEALTH SYSTEM
AND UNITED HEALTHCARE ANNOUNCED
THEY’VE TENTATIVELY STRUCK A
DEAL. THE INSURANCE PROVIDER AND MAJOR
HEALTH SYSTEM FOR MONTHS HAD
BEEN AT THE TABLE NEGOTIATING
INSURANCE CONTRACTS, ALL BEFORE
THE CLOCK RAN OUT THIS WEEK. WITHOUT A NEW CONTRACT, UNITED
HEALTH MEMBERS FACED OUT OF
NETWORK FEES AT UAB ENTITIES,
INCLUDING UAB HOSPITAL, CALLAHAN
EYE, AND OTHER FACILITIES. IT ALSO INCLUDED UAB DOCTORS
PROVIDING CARE AT OTHER
HOSPITALS. WITH A TENTATIVE AGREEMENT
REACHED, UNITED MEMBERS CAN KEEP
USING UAB FACILITIES AND
PHYSICIANS WITHOUT INTERRUPTION
IN COVERAGE. WE SPOKE TO ONE MOTHER WHO HAS
TWO KIDS WITH COMPLEX HEALTHCARE
NEEDS, BOTH WHO SEE UAB
SPECIALISTS AT CHILDREN’S
HOSPITAL. HER FAMILY USES UNITED
HEALTHCARE. SHE FACED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF
DOLLARS IN OUT OF POCKET FEES,
AND SAID NOT REACHING A DEAL
COULD BE LIFE-THREATENING FOR
HER KIDS. SHE TOLD US THE NEWS OF A
POTENTIAL AGREEMENT MEANS HER
CHILDREN ARE GOING TO KEEP
GETTING THE CARE THEY NEED, AND
HOPEFULLY KEEP THEM HEALTHY.>>CHILDREN’S IS THE ONLY
PEDIATRIC FACILITY IN THE STATE
OF ALABAMA, AND THEY HOUSE THOSE
SPECIALISTS THERE THAT HAVE THE
SPECIALTY IN THE CARE MY
GOING TO FIND THAT AT ANY OTHER HOSPITAL IN THE STATE OF
ALABAMA. MARY: UAB HEALTH SYSTEM AND
UNITED HEALTHCARE HAVE TWO WEEKS
TO FINALIZE THIS TENTA
