Beat the heat: Staying safe in the sun during summer

welcome back everybody helping you live healthy so summer is right around the corner but we’re already talking about the Sun and the heat especially this weekend on Memorial Day weekend many of you are already out in your pools that the beaches just hang it outside the Skin Cancer Foundation says more people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer annually than all other cancers combined imagine that all of them combined and the likelihood of developing melanoma doubles after more than five sunburns and it can be deadly but prevent it joining me now to discuss all of this Aaron pain they get that right I love your spelling maybe I re in healthcare with creative ways to protect your children’s skin in the Sun and I was telling you so I have a 4 and a 6 year old yes they know that we’re gonna do sunscreen in the beginning but getting them to keep applying you know and to engage in that discussion is a little harder but you said we need to be thinking about sunscreen before you even leave the house yeah so with sunscreen we want it to be able to soak into the skin before we go in the water before we get in the Sun so I really recommend doing it at home some of the fun ways that we can do it at home to get them to want to put sunscreen on before we get to the beach is let them paint that sunscreen on you know if you’re using something that’s a liquid paint it on make a funny face with it but make sure of course you rub it all weighing it in but make it make it a fun thing like now we’re not putting on sunscreen it’s like we’re putting on sunscreen our skin exactly thing you were saying even with the face you can make like you know a little mask and then yeah I mean funny characters if they you know a cat face a warrior face but making sure we do rub it all that and keep it out the eyes because that can ruin your day okay I have moms who’d say it they’re not going because those sons bring got in their eyes and then that kind of just ruins everything also you know make it fun because you need it as well so like the kids rub it in your skin as well yeah so take turns with it I mean you want to definitely be a role model for your kids if they see you putting on sunscreen they will want to put on sunscreen but take turns with it let them rub some on you and then you rub it on them okay and we talked about the aerosol sunscreens they are much easier to do they’re faster but you said you do have to be careful because there’s some things that can make it less effective right so we want to make sure with spray sunscreen that we are putting on an even coverage a lot of times of course it’s clear so we don’t really know for getting full coverage so making sure of that and if you are applying the spray outside making sure put your back towards the wind so that it’s not just taking that sunscreen in the wind and you said you actually like the creams because you know that you’re getting that book I do because I can see it right but the biggest thing with any type of sunscreen is making sure that it’s a broad spectrum which is going to say on there and that helps UVA and UVB rays and also SPF 30 and also I mean this is a little difficult cause if you’re spend the day in the pool or the beach you have to say okay let’s get out let’s dry off because you don’t want to apply sunscreen to wet skin right what’s the problem there when it’s wet skin it’s of course not rubbing in right and it can easily rub off I’m still making sure a couple of things to do when you go to whether it’s the pool or the beach Memorial weekend is this weekend so it’s perfect timing for it is if you’re in the water making sure that you towel off you reapply every eighty minutes weather no matter what type of sunscreen you’re using and then also bring extra clothing bring an umbrella if you’re going to the beach get the kids out of the Sun for a short time yeah so you give them a break and you can always give them a snack snack sunscreen there you go if you miss any of this information don’t worry we’ll post this interview on news for Dexcom all these stories live on the live healthy section so a good space to go if you’re trying to do better and we’ll be right back after the break
